Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Earn First Wins Following Recent Detentions
The Miami Heat put up 86 opening half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies
The Heat claimed a overwhelming 146 to 114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball match after guard Terry Rozier was detained for alleged illegal gambling.
Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested as part of a sweeping federal investigation into illegal gambling. Both men contest the allegations.
But, the Miami team were not distracted as they scored eighty-six first-half scores to lead Memphis by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year history.
Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and afterwards said Rozier had the support of the team.
"We support him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Rozier is somebody who is very dear to everyone. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through this."
The Trail Blazers also won their first game after the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and leading the team to a convincing 139-119 victory against the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Billups and how he coached," Splitter said. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events
Speaking about the detentions for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the past few days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
The commissioner further mentioned an league probe into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Hornets against the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the betting companies," he added.
"We then looked into that situation and were very transparent regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. And, of course, what they announced recently was an indictment.
"And two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Terry.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
