Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

After a drab midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
